When I was in college I worked on a lot of student films with writers and directors from a very expensive film school in New York City. Some students would spend an exorbitant amount of money to make their films by flying their entire cast and crew to Asia or Arizona to shoot. They did all of their work on film which by the foot would run them into thousands of dollars.
Digital film making has been a blessing and a curse as some films made are just plain bad. (A recent conversation with someone who helps organize The Hamptons Film Festival said that movies submitted on film were more likely to be seen while the ones shot on digital were more likely to be tossed in the reject pile.) The upside, of course, is that digital film has democracized film making allowing film makers from all cultural and economic backgrounds showcase their unique voice.
The film making process has become even more accessible with mobile phones. Portugal is having a cell phone film festival and will show the winners on a large screen in Libson.

Jabra BT160: Headsets to match your mood
Jabra is set to release the BT 160 bluetooth headset soon. With bluetooth headsets ubiquitously hanging off every other person’s ears nowadays, it could get difficult to match your own earpiece with, say your green floral skirt, or your denim jeans (casual Friday, anyone?).
The BT160 lets you avoid those costly fashion disasters by letting you change its appearance just by switching faceplates. What’s great is that Jabra includes 33 faceplates in the standard retail package.
The BT160 lets you talk for six hours max on a single charge, and has a standby time of 110 hours. It weighs in the mid-range of bluetooth headsets, at 0.63 ounces.
The headset also supports the following functions (may be phone/network dependent):
- Answer/end call
- Voice dial
- Last number re-dial
- Reject call
- Call waiting alert tone
Your ipod: not just for pumping up the volume…
While walking around the cold streets of New York City, I saw posters for Pump Pod.
It is interesting to see how technology and fitness have been melded together for this service. This might be a good alternative for those too cash strapped for a live personal trainer. The ideal audience would probably be traveling executives who have very little time but one of the aforementioned gadgets.
iDisk Diamond
For those of you who think USB thumb drives are too big to be constantly carried around, the tiny iDisk Diamond is your best alternative. It is a fully functioning portable USB drive, which just happens to be the size of a fingertip, and has 128MB of storage space.
Also, the iDisk has a small hole at the top so it can be easily attached to your key chain.
The iDisk Diamond costs 79USD, and is available at Dynamism.com

Samsung Helix
Another XM2GO player, the Helix by Samsung, is technically the same portable satellite radio device as the Pioneer Inno. The specifications of both players are identical, however there are slight aesthetic differences.
Both players have the same measurements and weight, as well as included peripherals and options.
The Samsung Helix is also set for a spring 2006 at 400USD.
So when chosing between the two latest XM2GO players, flip a coin it might make the process easier
Pioneer Inno
Portable XM Satellite radio players have come a long way in such a short time, as evidenced by Pioneer’s Inno, which for the first time allows both satellite radio and MP3/WAV playback from the same little unit.
The Inno allows you to listen to and record XM content, which can then be organized with the built in content management system. MP3 and WMA files that have been uploaded from a computer can also be organized into the same playlists.
Weighing 4.5 ounces and measuring 94 x 56 x 16mm, the Inno includes a 1.67? TFT screen, 1GB of storage (est. 50 hours of recorded content), artists and tune select, as well as sports and stock tickers.
Included with the XM player is a home docking station and antenna, ear buds, cables, carrying case, and XM/Napster CD.
The Pioneer Inno should be available in spring of this year for 400USD.
Go retro with a cryptex
Not exactly your high tech gadget, but cryptography buffs and the Da Vinci Code fans might want to check out the Cryptex. Cryptex.org creates customized Cryptex™ Security Boxes to user specifications.
A cryptex is a cylinder that encloses a scroll with a message inside. The tube has external rings that contain characters (letters or symbols) and rotate to act as a combination lock. Once the rings have been configured with the correct combination, an end of the cylinder opens up to reveal the scroll.
Not very secure by today’s standards, but still a cool gadget isn’t it?
Watch the trailer for the Da Vinci Code movie set to be released this May to catch a glimpse of the cryptex in action.
Splinter Cell Double Agent Delayed
For all of you Tom Clancy fans out there, you will just have to play another round on the games that are already released, as Double Agent won’t be coming out until around September.
No reason was given but since all versions have been delated, we know it is not the Xbox 360’s fault. It was previously believed that the game would appear on store shelves in March of this year.

This comes as a surprise to no one…
CNN reports that there is big money to be earned in the mobile porn industry. It is more prominent outside of the States and it will be interesting to see how long it would take corporations to jump on the smut bandwagon.
It won’t be long before people will need privacy filters for their cell phones.
