Desktops are In (again)

Pranksters Invade Starbucks With Desktop Computers

Oh man, I love this article on Engadget. Got me snickering as pranksters bring their desktop computers to Starbucks to mooch WiFi.
We all know that we usually get the limelight if we bring out our laptops, but this is so funny and plus its great publicity for Starbucks. And the funny thing about is they’re using Windows 95, yeah hello nostalgia.

We’ve already seen the confusion and hilarity some so-called “portable” computers can cause when taken out into public, but those shenanigans are nothing compared to the scene stirred up when the folks from Improv Everywhere lugged some ancient desktop computers (replete with CRT monitors) into a Starbucks.

Of Security Updates and Laptop-naming :p

December 12, 2007 by DummyGeekGurl

Just recently (I think around mid-December), I had updated Sayuri’s firmware. I had griped about it last December 11, and I was really, as in REALLY dissatisfied with it. But days later, Apple pushed a Security Update on me, so I bit the bait and got it.

I noticed Sayuri seemed faster and could now handle more apps, as opposed to the post-firmware-update fiasco. Which really made me happy, and I believe, it made Sayuri happy too. 🙂 Now all I need to do is to buy that power cord for my external drive so I can free up Sayuri’s fast-clogging hard drive. 🙁

Children, Reading and Computer Games

November 29, 2007 by Mr Butterscotch

It was widely reported yesterday that the popularity of computer games are being blamed for a drop in the reading skills of primary school pupils, according to a new report. The Reading Literacy Study studies 45 countries in a variety of ways in order to come to some sort of understanding of the level of reading skills across the spectrum.

England has moved down from 3rd in 2001 to 19th in 2006 – something which has shocked many, but not others, who feel that the education system in Britain is currently suffering – which is why there has been all manner of suggestions including keeping children in school until they are eighteen (for those who don’t know, you can leave school in the UK after initial GCSE education, finishing at age sixteen).

Scotland has also plummeted down from 14th place to 26th in the table – so a worrying trend across two of the countries in the UK – despite both having increasing numbers of students attending university.

Schools Minister, Ed Balls, had this to say about the apparent ‘crisis’ in reading:
‘We all need to help our children of all ages to see that reading can bring fun to their lives, feed their imagination, and develop their curiosity about the world,’
‘Today’s 10-year-olds have more choice than in 2001 about how they spend their free time.
‘Most of them have their own TVS and mobiles and 37 per cent are playing computer games for three hours or more a day – more than in most countries in the study.’

I’d like to add this to the minister’s commentary – doing anything for three hours per day (including studying after school) will have a negative impact on your life as a child. However, I’d also say that I’d be extremely surprised if his study was correct – I know from my childhood I had access to games every day, but never had a real chance to play them for three hours during the week. Granted, the weekend was another matter.

This brings me to another minister’s point of view:
‘While the Government says their policies are driving up standards every year, the independent auditors of our education system tell a very different story’
‘We are falling dangerously behind other countries and we know that those from the poorest backgrounds are suffering most.’

This is the view of government minster Michael Gove – Shadow Children’s Secretary. This is pretty much the job of the Shadow government in the UK, they bicker about the other party and then say that their policies are rubbish. Thus, Gove has done a good job here.

Nonetheless, I’d like to combine both points of view. If Gove is saying the government policies aren’t working yet Balls is saying that children are playing games for three hours a day, I’d suggest another thing. Blame the parents, as well as the system.

If you allow your child to spend endless hours doing something (by my calculations it would be in excess of 25 hours per week, given five hours per day at the weekend) then the rest of their free time is significantly reduced. Therefore, parents take note, make sure to get your child involved in reading and writing.

The system is of course also to blame. I’d say (regardless of what both The Daily Mail and The Guardian would have you believe) that literature is in the finest form that it has ever been in these days. We have access to almost every ‘classic’ ever written, along with everything from papers to medical journals online.

Therefore, the system is failing to adequately get children involved in reading, by (as they have done since the dawn of the modern school system) trying to force-feed them books that bare little relation to the modern world, however ‘classic’ we are told they are. I’m pretty sure that a teacher would have far more success with Life of Pi by Yann Martel than he ever would with Great Expectations for instance. And yes, I would say it is just as good. Times have changed, and so have tastes.

I would like to also point out a massive flaw in the argument here – CORRELATION DOES NOT INDICATE CAUSALITY. In plain English, just because there are more children with tv’s, mobiles and playing computer games, that does not mean that modern technology lies at the heart of this apparent lowered standard for reading and writing. Unless there is another study done to try and find out why children are spending less time with books (I’d be surprised if it’s not in some way because of the parents) then this is just knee-jerk reactionism.

I’ve defended computer games before and I’ll continue to do so as long as I am playing – which I would imagine will be for as long as I can remember. I think one thing Balls et al are forgetting is that their education was probably patently inferior to the education now provided to many children – I’m certainly aware that my cousin (who is fourteen) is now learning HTML, something I was sadly never educated in at school!

As a footnote, I not only a games player but an avid book reader. In fact, I have too many. I donate books now and then. Who knows, maybe one of these will be a book that manages to bring the magic of reading into a child’s life. I can only hope so, because just like computer games, reading can transport you to a magic world that’s all your own.

PC Gaming Rules!

November 26, 2007 by Jaren

They say that the Death of PC gaming is coming. With the kinds of games that are coming out to the market and into the shelves of retailers, Most which are graphics intensive and need a tons of resources if it’s to be ported to the PC, but what consoles lack is what PC games excel in, and that’s playability and the replay value. Games like Sid Meier’s Civilization, the PC version of Grand Theft Auto.. etc.

I’m a gamer, I own a couple own of consoles (xbox 360, PS2, PS3) it has it advantages and disadvantages, specifically my Xbox 360 has RROD problems even after the repairs has been done, my PS3 didn’t not come into terms with the hype and there’s not enough games. My Ps2 well, it didn’t even gave me problems. ohh I forgot, I trashed about 23 controllers and still My PS2 is working.

Now the Advantages of PC Gaming

  • Controls: A keyboard and mouse combo is the best way to go especially on First Person shooters, try aiming or sniping with a Dual-Stick Controller unlesss you’re used to it, it might take some time to aim or even frag an enemy, remember every seconds count on FPS games.
  • Mods: What I like about PC Gaming is that you can create mods and/or add mods other users created out. Remember the Batman Begins Mod for GTA, I like that, can you do that with the console version, I think not!
  • Tweaks: Tweaking is art, and if you apply that gaming you can push the limits your PC for that added performance boost.
  • HEX Editing: PC games are notorious for cheats done by hex editing either the savegames or the main application by changing the numerical values kinda reminds me of my old-school gaming habits when I used to play Might and Magic 3. I’d fire up my hex editor and search for the hex value for my experience points so that I can boost my stats, skills to near-GOD status, and I still do it (hex editing) when I’m playing Fallout 2.
  • Free Online Multiplayer: Playing online for free! Need I say more, there are lots of free online multiplayer games that I enjoy like Freestyle Online Philippines for example! Although Xbox Live is great and all you still have to choke up added cash. On the PC, you can play against opponents and have a LAN party.

A source of Classic Nintendo Games

October 30, 2007 by Jaren

I unearthed my old Nintendo System from my parent’s attic when I came to visit them. Even though it’s not working anymore.. I’ll try to fix it and see if I can revive this baby. Seeing it alongside my PS2, my Xbox 260, my Xbox, and my Wii, makes me teary eyed with joy. Along With it came Gaming Gems like Super Mario Bros., Mike Tyson’s Punch Out, Battle City and So on…
Upon seeing those games I pondered on the thought that if I started playing again I would lose all concentration on my work and just play everyday. I found a site that would serve my daily game craving and it’s easy.. just go to the site, choose a game, and play it, no installations needed. I found myself sneaking and going to the site every 15 minutes, just to satisfy my game cravings.

Here’s what I played

  • Gradius – I admit even though is a side-scroller with minimal graphics it’s still my favorite game.
  • Battle City
  • Altered Beast
  • Arch-Rivals
  • Bionic Commando
  • Contra
  • Double Dragon

The list continues, I could go on and on rambling about my favorite games but try it for yourself, It’s a perfect time waster, plus a relaxing change after an exhausting day of blogging and/or working.

My Halloween Costumes List

October 30, 2007 by Jaren

Now that Halloween is fast approaching, when can start thinking of what costume may look hip and cool on your Halloween Party. Or trick or treating with plasma rifle, lightsabers, guns, samurai swords

1. HALO 3 Costumes – Yes I admit it, I’m a HALO fan and I’m not ashamed to say it, but I’ve been doing lots of thinking if I wear my HALO Costume in Halloween, and find out that there’s about 50 of us wearing the same costume, I wouldn’t stand out and we would just end up calling it “HALOween”.

2. Star Wars Costumes – Oh yes, awesome costumes but with so many die hard Star Wars Fans out there thinking their kinky fantasies of “tying the knot just like Storm Troopers” Well, Think twice.

3. Resident Evil Costumes – Simple as it, wanna dress up like Leon Kennedy and for the girl’s cute suggestion would be Jill Valentine’s blue tube top and miniskirt which is kinda plain, for a more provocative costume try Ada Wong’s Red Costume.

4. Onimusha Costumes – Every one wants to be a samurai, in our dreams we often find ourselves being the lonely samurai, or wickedly good samurai. Samanosuke and Jubei Costumes are great haven’t seen much of these on Halloween parties I’ve been to.
