ps3remotes-flickruserjoo0ey

This week’s PS3 and PSN releases run the gamut from FPS games with a twist to new quest games from established franchises to games that utilize choice to affect gameplay. Consider adding some of these top picks to your must-have list, then spending a hot summer weekend in the air conditioning with your system, checking out the gameplay.

The Last of Us: This survival game uses gamer’s choice to both develop the relationship between the two main characters, Joel and Ellie, and to advance gameplay. The setting is Earth after the apocalypse, the only world that Ellie has ever known (Joel was alive before the apocalypse). Work through a series of levels to smuggle Ellie out of the quarantine zone while fighting off infected citizens, gangs of scavengers and military power. Since weapons are scarce, you’ll need to spend time foraging for supplies.

Aliens: Colonial Marines: Play as a member of the United States Colonial Marine squad and battle the aliens in the latest from the Aliens franchise. This Alien assault is bigger and badder than ever before, but as a Marine you’ve got a large stock of fire power with which to fight off the enemy. Aliens: Colonial Marines offers two gameplay modes: A single-player mode and a cooperative four-player mode where every player in the game assumes a distinct Colonial Marines persona and has a unique role to play in the battle.

Final Fantasy XIII 2: Final Fantasy fans will enjoy this game, which focuses on familiar characters Lightning, Cocoon and Serah. Set several years after Lightning saved Cocoon, the survivors have settled on Gran Pulse and started to rebuild. Lightning has disappeared and is presumed dead by some, but Serah holds out hope. As Gran Pulse is invaded by monsters, a stranger comes to save Serah and says he knows where Lightning is. Together, they go to find her.

Contra: Shattered Soldier: Releasing in demo version the week of June 10, Contra: Shattered Soldier revives the legendary NES Contra series. The demo even includes the scrolling 2D action form the initial release, which is sure to please established fans of the game. And young and old fans alike are sure to love the stellar 3D graphics and rotating cast of human, alien and machine enemies. Fight through the level to battle Contra’s signature big boss, and call in a friend using the 2-player cooperative mode if you need help to battle the big boss.

Pirates: Legends of the Black Buccaneer: Also releasing in demo form the week of June 10, Pirates: Legends of the Black Buccaneer follow the story of Francis Blade, a shipwrecked man. The game is set in the 16th century Caribbean. Wander around a mysterious island to find the medallion, which allows Blade to summon the spirit of the Black Buccaneer. Fight off natural forces and wander the island to collect washed-up ship parts so you can reassemble the ship and sail to safety. Play either as Francis Blade or as the Black Buccaneer, a supercharged character who you can only assume for a short period of time.

Try out some of these games or add them to your gift list for the game lover in your life. You just may ignite love for an old game franchise or discover something new for your system.

PS3 Slim models to get lighter, use less power

June 22, 2011 by Rogue

With the last two generations of gaming consoles, it’s become a common practice to release periodice updates to the hardware. Sony did this with the Playstation 2 and their incremental updates to the Phat line and then the announcement of the PS2 Slim. Microsoft has done this as well with their processor upgrades for the Xbox 360, which was one way of trying to solve the Red Ring of Death problem that plagued the first iterations of the console. The 360 then changed the chassis altogether with its “slim” lineup. [Read more…]

Sony announces PS3 motion controller coming Spring 2010

September 24, 2009 by Andy Merrett

ps3Not wanting to be overshadowed by Microsoft’s announcement that Project Natal is gaining support from a number of major games manufacturers, Sony has declared that its motion controller for the PS3 console will be available early next year.

Linking up to a PlayStation Eye camera, the system allows face, voice and body movement recognition in order to control games in a completely different way.

This motion controller (which doesn’t have an official name yet) is equipped with two motion sensors, three axes gyroscope and three axes accelerometer that can detect the controller’s angle and movement held in the user’s hand.

New slimmer PS3 coming this September

August 19, 2009 by Andy Merrett

That slimmer PS3 rumor from a couple of months ago has finally come to pass, with Sony announcing that a new PlayStation 3 will be released in September.

The new PS3 will feature a 120GB hard drive, Blu-ray drive, new system software (version 3.00) and BRAVIA Sync (for tying up to your Sony TV). It’ll cost $299.

Sony’s making a big thing of the re-branding, changing the name from PLAYSTATION 3 to PlayStation 3 (note the capitals — I’ve obviously been getting it wrong all these years as I’ve often referred to it the “new” way) and introducing a “PS3” logo to be engraved on the surface of the new console.

PS3 And Xbox360 Rumors

June 28, 2009 by Gadzooki

ps3-vs-xbox360They say that Hollywood is the place where rumors are born and thrive. They say that there are no secrets in Hollywood. But if you were to ask me, I would go as far as to say that in the world of consumer technology, rumors are just as rife. Rumors about games, phones, gaming consoles – practically everything that’s hot – are born every day and spread through the Internet like wild fire.

Take for example the latest dish on the two arch rivals – the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox360. These two gaming consoles have been the focus of countless rumors ever since their inception. This time, the word on the street is that Sony is phasing out the 80G model and focus production on the 160G model. This happened with the earlier models (like my beloved 60G PS3 which has a fried motherboard by the way). But that’s not the only thing. Christen dela Costa at Gadget Review thinks that a slimmer PS3 is on the way – and this from a “reliable” source. I wouldn’t mind a sleeker PS3 – it is time for me to get a new one anyway!

Now for the Xbox360 – the news is that by July or August, the Pro model is going to be phased out. The reason for this is that Microsoft is coming with some new bundles later this year. They are also bunking on some game exclusives to attract more gamers.

Again, mere mortals like us can only sit and wait to see what will actually happen.

PlayStation 3 Chat Pad

August 21, 2008 by Jim

Sony has announced, at Leipzig today, their latest addition to the PlayStation 3 accessory family.  The PlayStation 3 Chat Pad.  It’s actually a “snap on” accessory to the ordinary PS3 game controller, it’s due for consumer release by the end of November.  Ah, you see, it’s nearing Christmas and Sony would like to expand sales even more.  I bet you a number of games will soon spring out that uses the Chat Pad extensively.

This tiny keypad will allow players to “chat”… as if they’re not near for a whisper! 🙂  Quite interesting to note is that the Chat Pad is actually a blue tooth device.  Aaaahhhh… and I would venture a guess that it will connect to other blue tooth devices as well… there’s the rub?  Oh, and there’s a separate battery for the Chat Pad, good news is it can be recharged thru a USB port.

This Year’s Sequelitis

January 17, 2008 by Mr Butterscotch

Gaming is well known for its sequels; in fact one could very easily argue that it’s the glue that binds the industry together. What do you mean, I hear you ask? Well, simply put, for as long as games have been about, there’s been a sequel to the last big hit (hell, there’s even been sequels to games that haven’t been hits).

2008 is of course no exception to the rule – you could say, why break the habit of a lifetime? Pacman after all had Ms Pacman to follow. This probably makes me sound quite bitter, but I’m not. Some of my favourite games historically (including Super Metroid, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Forza Motorsport 2 and many more) have in fact been sequels. With that in mind, let’s see which games are coming out with a number following the name for this year…

Metal Gear Solid 4
MGS4, or Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is being developed by Kojima Productions for the PS3. There’s rumour that it’ll be the last game to feature Solid Snake, but then they also say it’ll be the last with involvement of Hideo Kojima, but if either of these things happen I’ll be surprised.

The game is set in 2014, features nanotechnology and Liquid Ocelot. Snake is sent to despatch him after an armed uprising takes place in the US. As it’s in the future, Solid Snake is of course far older than the last outing. The game is hugely advanced in the graphics department but sticks with the formula of bosses, sneaking and good old-fashioned action.

Resident Evil 5
Back once again for a fifth iteration (well in fact, let’s face it there’s far more such as Survivor etc), Capcom is releasing Resident Evil 5 on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Details are sketchy so far beyond the fact that Chris Redfield stars as the protagonist and the game will have a feel of Black Hawk Down.

There’s ample evidence to support the idea that the game will be similar in interface and controls to Resident Evil 4 (which is no bad thing), but there will be more interaction with the environment. One cited detail so far has been how Chris may suffer from heat. Enemies this time around appear to be Africans with melee weapons including scythes and machetes.

Ninja Gaiden 2
One of the best games to grace the original Xbox was certainly the original Ninja Gaiden. I say original, but of course it has been in the arcades, 3 games on the NES, a game on the PS3 and Master System – and that’s not even naming them all. However, let’s forget about that for the moment and consider the video of the game. It looks simply stunning.

Action looks incredibly fast paced with a lot going on at once, it is rumoured to have all the weapons from the first game as well as many new ones. The storyline should hit about thirty hours and the action-RPG elements such as the weapon combos are expected will be emphasised.

So, what to make of these sequels? Well I’d just like to say first of all that I don’t have anything against games that have a number at the end of them, as long as they offer something genuinely new and exciting to the series, I don’t see why they shouldn’t be made.

On the other hand however I’d like to say that new IP’s should always make it through the net. Developers and producers shouldn’t just rely on something safe when they know it’ll succeed, as it will eventually dry up the market for games. Long live the sequel, but let’s also foster creativity and newness.

Games to Watch for in 2008

December 27, 2007 by Jaren

Here are list of games which I like that are said to be released by 2008, so better watch up for this games. They may or may not be considered gaming gems, but for me it’s the gold. These are the games that would really prevent me from outside contact to human beings. I prefer inanimate objects to people and yes, I love my laptop more than my girlfriend. So if I have these games, I would never leave my house and I won’t stop playing these games.

  • Devil May Cry 4
  • GTA IV: Grand Theft Auto IV
  • Resident Evil 5
  • Fallout 3
  • Ninja Gaiden 2
  • Splinter Cell Conviction
  • Fable 2
  • Halo Wars

Sony Apologises For Resistance: Fall Of Man

October 29, 2007 by Mr Butterscotch

Recently, Sony has courted controversy (to a certain degree) due to featuring Manchester Cathedral in a violent video game – the fairly well received Resistance: Fall of Man. Sony’s Playstation game uses the historic church as a scene in which violent gunplay takes place.

Originally, spokespeople for the church asked for the game to be withdrawn from sale – Sony however did not accept this request, but it did apologise for using the graphics within the game.

The Very Reverend Rogers Govender had the following to say regarding the use of Manchester Cathedral:
“We do forgive Sony for what they have done, even though they still believe they have done nothing wrong. In an industry that is breaking new frontiers, it is important that long held traditions of film and television are maintained. These traditions include having courtesy, respecting the dignity of your subject, and admitting when mistakes have been made. In so many ways Sony have failed to live up to these standards by disrespecting people of faith and the victims of gun crime here in Manchester.”

I’m really in two minds about this. I’m not one of those politically correct do-gooders and taking the religious aspect out of the question could then raise the issue of image rights within a game – if I made a game for instance could I feature my local mall or would that be violating their image rights?

Of course, the real issue is the content – that is what Rev Govender after all is taking issue with. I highly doubt the company that brought us the Playstation, the original mass-market entertainment system, would want to disrespect anyone, either those of faith or any victims of crime, gun or otherwise. However, this begs an important question – should first person shooters really feature real-life locations? If not, it then surely draws some realism from the game.

It’s interesting that the Very Reverend Rogers Govender picked up on how gaming is at the forefront and is breaking new frontiers. I’d like to really consider this for a second. There’s still a lot of argument over whether games are art. If they are, then surely they are allowed to provoke debate in this manner? Perhaps because art is made for purpose (i.e. it is what it is) whereas games are made solely for entertainment moves them into a different direction.

One real issue here is the bad press games receive in general. Things like this don’t help and in a way I’m inclined to say that Sony have slipped up. They maybe shouldn’t have done what they did – set a ‘violent’ videogame in an important religious location.

However, let’s be fair about what Resistance: Fall of Man is. The storyline is as follows:
‘In Resistance: Fall of Man, the U.S. and Britain band together in a last-ditch effort to save Europe and Asia from a horrific scourge. In mere decades, the Chimera, a species of unknown origin propagating a virus that converts other life forms into more Chimera, has overrun Russia and all of Europe. Humanity’s hope for survival is slim, and the tide of the battle rests on the shoulders of U.S. Army Ranger, Sgt. Nathan Hale.’
So, you’re fighting an unknown alien enemy, and one scene happens to be in a church. It is a console FPS – plain and simple. Religious beliefs are held above all others for some, which is exactly the reason why Sony has hit a nerve here. I don’t think however though that it really relates to gun crime and to be honest, I think that it has been blown a little out of proportion.

Nonetheless, these are the sorts of issues that will come about as gaming comes further into popular culture and the general public are more aware of the sorts of games that are out there. Of course, the whole issue of video gaming violence is still very high on the agenda, and is something I’ll explore in a separate article.
