Lately I’ve had a lot of problems with one of my hosting companies, Dreamhost. The service is just about the worst you can possibly have, the server load is miserable, the downtime is deplorable. It’s all got me thinking about how web hosting could be so much better.

It seems to me Web hosting is a black hole of money. All of us webmasters who run websites from small busines owners to big companies need reliable hosting. How could we utilize reliable hosting and also make a social difference in the world.

1) Use a reseller account from a Green Hosting Company
2) Utilize the overhead profits give back to third world countries
3) Encourage hosting clients to publicize their green host, that helps out on social causes
4) Provide better service than the other guys

Commentary:
Running a server company can be mind blowing, but being a reseller isnt as bad as you might think especially if you limit your services to mostly blogs. Plus its a great way to make a difference in the world and spend more time working at home. Besides who wants to think about how much energy their website is sucking down after getting TechCrunched or making it to the front page of Digg.

What about having your web site powered by solar….AISO (http://www.aiso.net) is 100% solar powered, both their servers and data center are powered by onsite solar panels. And they also have a partnership with Co-Op America, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Green Building Council. Plus, they are doing more then just making sure their electricity is green. Their data center and office is green too by using environmentally friendly air conditioners, solar tubes to bring in natural light, a propane powered generator instead of diesel, VMWare virtualization to reduce their server electricity usage, 6 watt energy saving desktops computers for their employees, and soon to be LEED certified as a green data center, the only public one in North America.

what about hamster powered web hosting? studies have shown that a properly motivated hamster can put out 5 horse power… this means that with 5000 hamsters you can have 25000 horse power. which is enough to power one city block for 12 hours. better yet while we are going back to our roots lets just get slaves to do it… again studies have shown that average slaves without any motivation can power an entire city. lets make slave powered data centers and end global warming.

    peace and love,
    from
    the web hosting genius.

Silverlight – Is This Going To Be Web 3.0?

It’s not that often when a technology comes along that leaves me amazed. You know, the sort of thing when you look at it you think “wow, this is good. Not just good, but perhaps is going to make a difference to websites in a very real way in the near future”. [...]

The CrunchPad is dead. Now what?

It’s dead, Jim.

And now, news of the CrunchPad’s demise has reached the blogosphere (twice-over, I must say), we’re here to examine the post-mortem. It was an ambitious project: an internet tablet meant to sell cheap. Everybody was waiting for it with bated breath, but it never came.

Steam finally coming to Macs in April

I’m really agnostic in this whole Mac vs. PC thing here – I use (and love) a Windows 7 workhorse, but at the same time I’m seriously considering getting a Mac for my next computer. Of course, it goes without saying I can’t make fun of both sides of the debate: Windows – blue screen [...]
