Need a Hug? Get the Sense-Roid!

July 1, 2011 by Noemi

Are you the kind of person who thinks that you have to always show your tough side no matter what? You know, those people seem to be insensitive and uncaring, but in reality, are actually human beings who also need some tender care. Some of these are lucky enough to have other people to come home to – people who love them and meet their emotional needs. At the other end of the spectrum, there really are people who might not have anyone to turn to when they need a sympathetic ear – or a warm hug.

This is where Japanese inventors will not fail the whole world. One of the latest quirky gadgets to have come from the Land of the Rising Sun – the Sense-Roid.

Hug Yourself Gadget

Hug Yourself Gadget

It doesn’t take much imagination to figure out what the Sense-Roid does based on that image, does it? The Sense-Roids is a “hug yourself gadget”, and it does what it says on the tin. For people who need a hug (and we all need one every now and then!) and don’t have anyone to help out with it, the Sense-Roid will do the job.

This gadget was developed by a group from University of Electro-Communications and even won the top prize at IVRC 2010. The Sense-Roid system is composed of a mannequin (or something which looks like a mannequin) and a jacket. Both mannequin and jacket are hooked up with all sorts of tactile sensors, which tells the system if a user needs a hug. That is, when the owner of the Sense-Roid initiates a hug.

When this happens, the sensors activate muscle-like devices in the jacket, giving the user the sensation that he is being hugged back. More than hugging, Sense-Roid can also rub your back and even give a massage. The trick is to give the device input that you want to be done back to you.

Weird – there is no doubt about that, but I won’t be surprised if the Sense-Roid does not get its own circle of followers. Come to think of it, this is not as weird as that Kiss Transmission Device I wrote about.

Here’s a video of how the Sense-Roid works.

Kiss Transmission Device: Gadget for Long Distance Lovers?

May 2, 2011 by Noemi

Kiss Transmission Device
Has your long distance relationship been taking its toll on you? Being far apart for extended periods of time is not for every couple, but sometimes, things can’t be helped. If others have succeeded at long distance relationships, why can’t you?

Then again, if technology can help you with your issues, you might as well take advantage of it, right? (Maybe not.)

Enter the Kiss Transmission Device, a gadget that has been developed by The Kajimoto Laboratory at the University of Electro-Communications in Japan. And yes, the device does what it says on the tin – it transmits kisses so that partners who are physically far from each other can, let’s say, enjoy more than each other’s company.

But how can you transmit a kiss for real?

Two words: “tactile communications”.

Basically, what the researchers are trying to do is to get the device to give the user a real feeling that he or she is kissing with his or her partner. Okay, I can’t do this – it’s just too weird – so let’s get the explanation straight from the horse’s mouth.

This device is for communications within the mouth, in other words, the goal is to obtain the feeling of kissing. If you take one device in your mouth and turn it with your tongue, the other device turns in the same way. If you turn it back the other way, then your partner’s turns back the same way, so your partner’s device turns whichever way your own device turns.

It is achieved only by motor rotations, and you control the rotation positions via PC. It is called a bilateral control, and the turn angle information is sent reciprocally by both devices to maintain the same position. Right now the values are handled by one PC, but if a system is put together to handle the values over a network, then it would be easy for this operation to be conducted remotely.

The researchers also mention “elements of a kiss”: sense of taste, manner of breathing, and moistness of the tongue. Man, oh, man.

The entire thing system is not yet complete, but we definitely see where this is going. Now I don’t know about you, but while I know that there might be a market for this gadget (albeit a doubtful one), I am too weirded out by the idea. Just because I don’t want to be alone in this, why don’t you watch the video below? 😉

If you still think this will help you, please, get some professional help.
