Sony Ericsson Vivaz – phone with 720 P HD Recording, 8.1 megapixels

February 1, 2010 by Ade

Okay, so everyone’s really crazy over the latest Android or Windows Mobile phone – um, maybe not Windows Mobile, but you get the general idea. The internet also split in half last week over Apple’s latest gadget, the iPad. Which is being criticized to be an oversized iPod touch. Of course, it goes without saying that people are pretty much excited over the 4th-generation iPhone, along with the iPhone OS 4.0. And everyone’s really excited to see where Nokia is taking Maemo.

So, no Symbian love, huh? I know, that mobile operating system is old and pretty much bloated. It’s on its way out, but I’m sure there can be a few phones who’ll be able to run the endangered OS and still come out amazing, right?

Enter the Sony Ericsson Vivaz. The Vivaz is running Symbian S60 5th Edition (meaning it’s got a touchscreen, you guys), and hardware-wise, I don’t see any geek worth his salt not salivating over this baby: 8.1 megapixel autofocus cam with image stabilization, face detection, and 720p video capture, FM radio, AGPS, WiFi, TV-out at VGA resolution, and a 3.2-inch WVGA (or 640 x 360) display.

Whew. Those are pretty solid specs. I don’t know if the Symbian OS is going to work for or against the enjoyment of the phone, but the hardware specs are going to more than make up for the OS if it turns out bad. But then, Sony Ericsson has a history of turning out really great UIs for their phones, so I don’t think we have to get worried here.

I’d like to hear your opinions on the Vivaz, guys. Or if you have more tips, you can just leave them in the comments.

Faith: Sony Ericsson’s new QWERTY phone leaked

January 13, 2010 by Ade

Let me tell you about this little secret I have: I love QWERTY phones. Ever since I got my hands on Nokia’s business class E63 with its beautifully made QWERTY keypad, I refuse to look back. In fact, I don’t even know how I got by without QWERTY in the first place. Now Nokia’s User Interfaces are another discussion though. I hate the living crap out of Nokia’s UI. It’s dated and in places ugly – well that’s until Symbian gets replaced by Maemo in Nokia’s N-Series. Nokia phones do get huge plus points for its solid construction. Yeah, construction beats UI everytime. Sony Ericsson phones, on the other hand, have the most gorgeous UI I’ve seen. It helps that they’ve been constructed solidly though.

Which brings us to the alleged new phone by Sony Ericsson. Called Faith, the phone will run Windows Mobile 6.5 and feature a physical QWERTY keyboard. To be honest, the new phone’s design is kind of cutting-edge if the phone was made back in 2005, but I think the features can compensate for its looks.

Taken from Daily iPhone Blog, the phone’s alleged features are (grammatical errors and all):

  • Multi-tasking with delight
  • Panels for 24 hours life
  • Sleek design with beautiful ergonomic
  • Qwerty keypad with good usability
  • AGPS
  • 2.4” QVGA touch screen
  • Micro Sd Card slot
  • Windows Mobile 6.5
  • Green Heart
  • Colors: Silver & Black

Honestly, I’m not too excited about Faith, especially over the fact that it runs Windows Mobile. Maybe if they put in Android, I’d give it a second look. Also, the phone looks like it came out of 2005. I’d give it a “MEH.”

But then, this phone is a leak, so it could be a fake. We’ll see in the days ahead.
