Do You Need to Go on a Digital Diet?

June 27, 2011 by Noemi

The Digital Diet

I’ve got several questions for you on this Monday morning:

  • Have you ever realized that you were texting while your child was telling you about her day at school and later couldn’t remember any of the details of the story?
  • Does a ringing/vibrating cell phone interrupt and trump everything else?
  • Do you feel anxious if you’re offline for any length of time?
  • Do you know you shouldn’t be texting and driving — but still do it?
  • Have you ever felt that something hasn’t really happened until you post it on Facebook or tweet about it?
  • Do you find that your family can be in the same room but not talking to one another because you’re each interacting with a different device?

Pardon me if answering questions is not on your list of Monday morning tasks, but these questions just might help you live a more fulfilling life – NOT!  Seriously, though, if you have not heard of this book called The Digital Diet, then you might want to check it out.  This is especially true of you answered yes to any of the questions above.

Authored by Daniel Sieberg, tech guru and correspondent for the likes of ABC, MSNBC, CBS, and CNN, the book is all about “de-teching”.  The idea came about thanks to the author’s realization that he was becoming overdependent on technology.  With a career that is largely based on technology, his situation might be more understandable.  But how about the average person who may not need too much tech (and gadgets) in his life?

One cannot deny it – we are overwhelmed by all sorts of gadgets these days.  Think about it – how many computers do you own?  How many mobile phones and mp3 players do you have?  How many gadgets do you “need” when you go out?  I have to be honest and admit that I might have a need to read this book.  As you can see, here at Gadzooki, we do have a penchant for gadgets.  And there is nothing wrong about that.  The problem arises, perhaps, when one can’t go out without a mobile phone, an iPod Touch, an iPad, and a laptop.  Throw in an iPod nano (just because it has music that the others don’t have) into the fray – you get the picture.

The book is all about a 4-step action plan which can help you re-focus and get your priorities straight, without totally eliminating tech from your life.  I’d never suggest that anyway!  Here are those four steps.

Step 1//Re: Think:

Consider how technology has overwhelmed our society and the effect it’s had on your physical, mental, and emotional health.

Step 2//Re: Boot:

Take stock of your digital intake using Sieberg’s Virtual Weight Index and step back from the device.

Step 3//Re: Connect:

Focus on restoring the relationships that have been harmed by the technology in your life.

Step 4//Re: Vitalize:

Learn how to live with technology—the healthy way, by optimizing your time spent e-mailing, texting, on Facebook, and web surfing.

At the end of the day, it’s all about living a life that is not centered on technology and gadgets.  And while we may be all about “I want one!” here at Gadzooki, we also understand that there is more to life than cool gadgets!

You can get a copy of this book at Amazon for $9.89.

More so, brief descriptions are included with the gadget image/name.  And if your preferred gadget is not in their list, you can always add it via the Wildcard section at the bottom of each page.  After all, just because T3 has not identified a certain product to be on their voting list, it does not mean that the gadget is not worthy of a vote!

With the voting open, experts are saying that at the end of the day, the main battle will be between Apple and Android devices.  Looking at the list of gadgets in the categories that T3 has made available, it is difficult to disagree.

What are you waiting for?  Go and participate in what might very well be the most important vote you will cast this year.  (Well, in terms of gadget goodness, that is.)

Limited Edition iGo LED Pocket Projector

April 15, 2011 by Noemi

igo_gold_4
I can totally understand a person’s obsession with shiny gadgets. How can one not be distracted by something shiny that does nifty things? Even pico projectors, which I don’t think I have a need for, can be an attractive purchase – if only just because.

This limited edition pico projector from Personal Projector UK is something else, though. It is encased in 24 carat gold, which should already give you the idea that it does not come cheap. Described as the ultimate luxury gadget, the package includes cables (HDMI cables as well). At GBP999 (about USD1600), I get how it can be the ultimate luxury.

To be fair to the manufacturer, the pocket projector does have its highlights. It has received a design award from CES Innovations 2011 Design and Engineering Awards. It also has been reviewed by BBC’s Something for the Weekend and was described as having “really incredible quality”. (Now for that price, nothing less than incredible quality will do, don’t you think?) The manufacturers also highlight the fact that this pico projector can be connected to practically any device that you own. Flip, smartphones, digital cameras – name it and the iGo LED Pocket Projector will be able to connect to the device. The result? You can project whatever pictures and movies that you want to show off wherever you may be.

Oh, if you are from the UK, you can get a FREE 30 Day Subscription to LOVEFiLM + a £10 Amazon.co.uk Gift Voucher. Thank God for small favors, eh? Still, if money is not an issue, this gadget will be an interesting conversation piece if anything. Buy it here.

Sprinkler Hide-A-Key

March 21, 2011 by Jim

b7c9_sprinkler_hide_a_key

You remember the time you locked yourself out of the house AND nobody’s coming home in say about 3-4 hours still.  Bummer eh?  And what is there to do but wait it out until they come home.  Well now there is hope.  The traditional spare key would be hid under the welcome mat, above the door post or a lamp neary.  Too bad criminals know they’re there too.  And you wouldn’t even think twice to put it there anyway.

A simple solution would be to hide it somewhere else, but where?

“this fake inground sprinkler head offers a good place to put a set of spare keys or maybe an emergency USB flash drive. It looks like a regular sprinkler head and the tough water-tight plastic case holds multiple keys.”

You can get it at ThinkGeek right here for US$6.00

(Just hope that thieves don’t read blogs too! haha)

Time-lapse Garden Video Camera

February 22, 2011 by Jim

timelapse_gardenjpg

You only see time-lapse videos in hi-tech movies, well now it’s your turn. This garden video camera can literally watch your garden grow. What a perfect time as spring has just come about. Garden hobbyists would surely enjoy the labor they pour into the ground day in and out.

Available right here for about US$150. It can focus as close as 20″ away to illustrate petal growth or, with its wide 54″ field of view, it can capture perennials as they grow to conceal your spent spring bulb foliage.

How does it perform the time-lapse effect? Well… The camera takes a picture at one of six pre-determined intervals (five seconds to 24 hours) and combines them into a single 1280 x 1024 resolution AVI movie file for easy playback on a computer. It has a light sensor that turns off the camera at dusk and back on at dawn, allowing for continued video capture each day. Movies are timestamped and stored on the camera’s removable 2GB USB flash drive, which can take up to 18,000 pictures.

Is it at all weatherproof? It surely is!

Coverage… It’s All About Coverage

January 31, 2011 by JW18

Nahhh…… not about the skimpy clothes the girl who passed by is wearing but rather the coverage of the many networks that are offering mobiles all over the place. Carriers offer mobile phone units for free in exchange for subscriptions to their mobile plans which is the norm in the industry. The mobile phone invasion has resulted in a whole generation of people who cannot exist without their mobiles that just keep on getting better and smaller.
mobilecarriers
Though most carriers have expanded their coverage areas, it is still wise to compare cell phone coverage areas for the best deal. Though dead-spots may never be eliminated, the larger the area coverage, the better, so you don’t get a no coverage message as you make an emergency call. The huge expanse of the US being one solid mass is easy to cover with satellite and land-based site antennas but even in the most developed areas, too much interference or noise as it is called can interfere with your mobile’s signal.
