It looks like in a stroke of originality SEGA has decided to name the next Sonic game Sonic the Hedgehog, in honor of the 15th anniversary of the original SEGA Genesis game.
I doubt the game will play much like the original, but the confusion should be interesting as searches for Sonic the Hedgehog will bring up both the original and new game in search engines as the game gets closer to release.
