GPS devices are very hot items right now. I myself was quite enamored with them when I first saw it in action years ago. Now, GPS devices can be found everywhere and for good reason, they’re really quite useful. For the longest time GPS could only be found within the domain of dedicated GPS devices. But with the technology getting more accessible and affordable, GPS technology is now being introduced to other devices, most notably in smartphones. In fact, GPS-equipped smartphones are beginning to dominate the market and eating into the share of dedicated GPS devices. The main reason for this being that GPS-enabled smartphones allow you to just carry one device that does a lot of things instead of bringing a number of dedicated devices.
Using convergence devices does have its benefits. But if a dedicated gadget can offer some nifty features then it’s certainly worth a look. For example, the DeLorme has released the inREACH dedicated GPS device. The unique feature the inREACH device is offering would-be buyers is the ability to send SMS messages through the Iridium satellite phone system. This means you can send an SMS from anywhere on the planet. The inREACH Two-Way GPS Communicator doesn’t have a keyboard or a touchscreen so what you have to do is to compose three different distress messages before you embark on your trip. When a situation arises that you will need help you can send out one of the three messages. The SOS indicator light built into the device will change color once the message you sent has been received. But if you pair the device with an Android phone then you can compose and send 160 character messages and send it not just as SMS but also has email, Facebook updates or Twitter tweets. It gives a whole new meaning to connectivity.
