Logitech has today announced two new music game controllers designed for use with music games on the Nintendo Wii.

Epic Mickey: Steampunk Disney Game

August 10, 2009 by Ade

I’ve never really been a fan of the Mickey Mouse and friends aspect of Disney. I find it too childish and all, but they’re, well, inescapable.

Over at artist Fred Gambino’s website there is a section called ‘Epic Mickey’. It contains Mickey Mouse art reimagined in a steampunk setting. It is rumored to be concept art for a new interactive game from Disney.

Epic Mickey (most probably a code name) is rumored to be developed for the Wii. There’s very little news about it now, but I am so loving the steampunk reimagining. It is something Disney needs to appeal to the hardcore gamer crowd.

The flooding of the Wii

December 10, 2008 by Jim

Woke up today to a Walmart ad about tens of thousands of Wii consoles available for US$249.  Take note that those are only basic console sets (console and a controller)… should it come with an extra controllers, games and other bundled items… the price becomes US$329.  While I’m not totally a Wii fanboy, I’d say this deal comes perfectly during the holidays.  I’m sure parents will take note of this and line up for one.  I do hope PlayStation 3, the Xbox and some other stuff follows suit.

I’ve always looked for deals around this time of the year.  Walking around BestBuy, Target & Game Stop, I always see product bundles top shelf.  The key is to check the papers, cut the coupons, surf the internet… generally be keen at following through where the discounts are.  While it IS a job in itself, you’d be thankful your wallet at least remains a little “fatter” after the holidays.

“We’re thrilled to be able to provide more customers the opportunity to experience and enjoy the Nintendo Wii this Christmas,” said Kelly Thompson, Walmart.com chief merchant. “Based on the success we’ve seen with Wii Fit and Nintendo Wii, customers recognize that Walmart.com is the online destination for the strongest values and best selection in video games this season.”

As usual, these offers are only available while supplies last, and given how popular the Wii and Walmart both are, we’d expect these supplies to go pretty quickly. If you’re looking to get a Wii for your loved ones this holiday season, give it a try.

Wii Light Sword

November 22, 2007 by Jaren

Wii Light Sword

Now this is a cool toy to play with introducing the Wii Light Sword, so is it a lightsaber, kinda or a Wii-saber nah. It’s the Wii Light Sword and you don’t need to be a Jedi to wield, all you need is a Wii console (of course) and the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed to be able to “really” enjoy the duel mode and the actual game itself. Now what do you get when you cram in 22 ultra bright LED’s inside a plastic casing? You get a very cool controller and kick-ass gaming experience. This baby is powered by three AA batteries and sells for $30 each. Time to practice that lightsaber weilding skills and the proper use of the force.

Now Star Wars : The Force Unleashed was launched for the Wii, it had one thing in mind the feel of the lightsabers as you swing at your enemies and practically dice them to bits. Now the Wiimote is cool, but with this baby, be prepared for some Jedi fantasy action come true.

Nintendo – Not Enough Wii To Go Round

November 18, 2007 by Mr Butterscotch

A chronic shortage of Nintendo’s Wii console could mean disappointment for those putting it on their Christmas list. It’s clear – both anecdotally and in sales figures – that retailers are once again having problems coping with demand for Nintendo’s latest console – especially in light of some hugely acclaimed releases including Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Super Mario Galaxy.

One way in which to keep an eye on stock levels is to use www.wii-consoles.co.uk if you’re in the UK. Apparently, there’s going to be a huge push by Nintendo to ship more consoles – this will see more than 3.5 million consoles being delivered globally. Allocations haven’t been yet announced for various territories across the world.

There are some who claim that Nintendo are deliberately controlling stock for a variety of reasons – one of which is creating demand. The problem with this idea of course is that the Wii is already hugely in demand and not supplying stock can soon become counter-productive, especially as both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 are cheaper than they were.

Nintendo have had this to say about the shortage:

“Nintendo is now in a position in which seasonality demand trends are being broken, therefore the demand for Wii hardware is constant throughout the whole year globally. Due to this phenomenon it is possible that the demand for Wii hardware may outstrip supply”

One of the issues around the Wii being in short supply and high demand is the way in which retailers are hiking up the price. If you’re lucky enough to find a retailer stocking one, you’re more than likely to find it bundled with various games that you don’t want. This ensures a high margin for retailers on stock that they are having problems getting.

Quite a few people have used their initiative and found quite a few stock on ebay.com. Then there are those who are going to various European countries to buy the console of choice. My personal advice would be to make sure that you order as soon as possible if it’s what you want from Santa Claus this year.

Wii Fit aims to make you sweat

August 4, 2007 by Rogue

wii-fit.jpg

I’ve been working at home for the better part of a decade now. A lot of my friends tell me that they envy the fact that I can earn money while staying at home. They then cite all of the attendant benefits of telecommuting. I have to agree it does sound like a good setup, except for one glaring, undeniable downside to this whole gig. I have gotten FAT. Working at home means the most strenuous exercise you will probably get is that short walk to the fridge or the bathroom. I have so much work that going to the gym is not even an option.

That’s why I think the Nintendo Wii is such a godsend for us work at home drones. What better way to shed those pounds than play an actual “game” on your TV with a machine that actually prevents you from just sitting down? Great, eh?

Well, Nintendo does see some potential in the Wii as an actual fitness aide and they are reinforcing it with the announcement of the Wii Fit. This is a new game title, ok, exercise game that lets you do various exercises and physical mini games while monitoring your BMI (that’s body mass index for those who’ve never even seen the inside of a gym).

The Wii Fit will be used in tandem with a new peripheral, the Wii Balance Board that will detect how your weight shifts in response to the commands being issued on screen. The Wii Fit is scheduled for release in Japan at the latter part of the year and will have its US debut during the first or second quarter of 2008.

Until then, I’ll just need to diet and walk up and down the stairs.

The Manhunt 2 Ban

June 27, 2007 by Mr Butterscotch

You probably haven’t heard but over in the UK Manhunt 2 has been banned. Rockstar games, no strangers to controversy themselves what with Bully, GTA etc in their stable of games, have perhaps pushed too far this time.

Here in Britain, the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) have at this time refused to certify the PS2 and Wii title. This means in effect that the game cannot be legally sold – as all media entertainment (film and games) must get a certificate in order to be sold in shops.

The BBFC had this to say about the game: “Manhunt 2 is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing“.

Now, let’s just think about this for a moment. Yes, Manhunt 2 is about the killing. But it’s a game. Should we be trivialising violence? Well, that’s just one of the questions that can be raised about this issue. We’ll come to that in a moment though. IF we just look at the idea that there is an ‘unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone’ we then have to question why a film like Hostel got a release. Frankly I’d say that it is more squirm-worthy than a rather average violent game.

The BBFC also offered the following: “There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game,” it added, and highlighted “the game’s unrelenting focus on stalking and brutal slaying and the sheer lack of alternative pleasures on offer to the gamer“.

So, there is sadism on offer. Can you tell me when Counterstrike didn’t offer some sadism? Here, as far as I know, Manhunt 2 is a single player experience. You’re therefore bashing a bunch of pixels. Admittedly, perhaps it’s a bit far to be using the Wii controller to emulate a stabbing, but hey – it is a game. Virtual. Not real.

The crux of the argument is that there is a potential for harm with the sale of Manhunt 2. The BBFC take this on board when deciding whether to give a certificate, and at what rating. I recall a number of films (such as I Spit On Your Grave), which were banned long ago – only to resurface years later. I doubt this would happen with games though, if simply because how fast the medium is moving.

The real issue here is how games (and other entertainment mediums more generally) can affect people. What happens when we play? Do our brains switch off for a kill-fest? Frankly, I’m no psychologist so I can’t say either way. I will say one thing though; there are more than a few murderers who have quoted the film The Matrix as a factor in their crime.

The Matrix is not a film that would instruct anyone to kill. However, if someone is on the edge, it perhaps could give a reason, a ‘trigger factor’ for his or her psychosis. The idea that the world is not real, or is somehow an illusion would have some resonance with those who have a problem with everyday life. It would give a sense of escapism.

Thus with games, the same with film. They are without a doubt fantastic forms of entertainment, but I really don’t believe that anyone will be affected by them (provided they are of age to view the content) beyond perhaps talking about what they saw/played the next day. For something to act as a ‘trigger’ there must be something going wrong in the first place.

I guess the real reason this censorship annoys me so much is that I’d almost certainly never play Manhunt 2 but I feel that as it is a game with average visuals those who would want to play it are missing out. I’m still convinced that films like Saw, Hostel and Ichi The Killer have a far greater chance of disturbing an easily influenced mind. Maybe that’s just me, but I’m off to play Ninja Gaiden – with the decapitations and blood switched on.
