All the Geeks Love Wii

May 10, 2006 by Gadzooki

e3 2006 has started and if the headlines on Digg are any indications, all the geeks love Nintendo most. Whether it’s Nintendo’s forthcoming Light Gun or video footage of Mario Galaxy Gameplay or even the Wiimote’s Doppler Effect, the Geeks all seem to be Nintendo fanboys (just like us at Gadzooki!).

We’ll see if the Geek likability factor turns into sales this time around, or whether Nintendo’s Wii is just another sexy idea handled without proper execution. One thing’s for sure: the Geeks Love Gadgets and Nintendo Wii has Gadgets Galore.

Update: Another front pager on Digg: Nintendo Wii Virtual Console Images
Update 2: Another front page Digger: First Super Smash Brothers News for Wii
Update 3: Yet another Nintendo front pager: Take a Tour of Nintendo’s E3 Booth
Update 4: Wired Trashes Sony For Lack Of Innovation
Update 5: XBox 360 Gets Some Props for Gesture Recognition

Note: It is worth pointing out that almost all the Digg stories from e3 on XBox 360 & PS3 are lukewarm to negative.

Note 2: All of the updates mentioned above happened sequentially, without a single positive Digg sotry on PS3 or XBox 360

The guys over at IGN have the first public picture of the Wii’s Light Gun from E3. Looks cool. Notice the analog stick on the top the gun. Interesting indeed. If you look closely, you’ll also see how the Wii-mote slides into the Light Gun Shell (look at the contrast between white and gray towards the front of the gun).

Exclusive Resident Evil Game for Nintendo Wii

May 10, 2006 by Gadzooki

Resident Evil 4 was one of the best games ever made. If you haven’t played it, do yourself a favor and go do it…now.

Then, come back and discover the news that Capcom is releasing an exclusive Resident Evil game for the Nintendo Wii. So you thought a game couldn’t get any more nail biting than RE4? Imagine what it’s going to be like when it’s YOUR BODY that’s immersed in the game (not just your thumbs!).

In it’s official statement Capcom had this to say about the forthcoming game: “The next-generation console Wii is garnering much attention with its groundbreaking new controller. The new Resident Evil game for the console will combine the series’ intense gaming experience and atmosphere with the revolutionary control system of the Wii.”

The hair on my neck is standing up just thinking about the possibilities here.

Wii Price Point: Should Nintendo Reveal Or Not?

May 10, 2006 by Gadzooki

IGN has spoken and they are somewhat disappointed with Nintendo’s performance at E3 2006 (See: Wii Not Priced and Matt’s Thoughts on Nintendo’s Conference). One of the recurring complaints is the fact that Nintendo failed to release the price of Wii. According to them, releasing a low price point could have been like going for the jugular and sticking it to Sony who’s PS3 is priced out of the gaming atmosphere.

The question I’d like to raise, however, is whether Nintendo’s move is bad from a strategic standpoint. As gamers we all want to see the price. We want all the info. But let’s think about it from the big N’s vantage point. Let’s take a poker analogy for a second: Nintendo now has the upper hand. For one, they’ve seen both Microsoft’s and Sony’s hand. On top of that, everyone already knows that the Wii will be priced well below both XBox 360 and Playstation 3 (at least at launch). Isn’t that enough knowledge to whet the consumer’s appetite? Now, if they withold their price well into the summer, they give Microsoft less time to define a price-cut to match the Wii release price. That seems very smart. Microsoft is looking to grab market share and tend to be extremely competitive. By witholding the price of Wii, Nintendo is maintaing a strategic pricing advantage and preventing any easy undercutting moves by Microsoft or Sony.

Nintendo’s E3 Press Conference: Playing = Believing

May 10, 2006 by Gadzooki

Anyone paying even a little attention to the upcoming generation of console systems could have predicted Nintendo’s strategy going into E3. Nintendo has publicly stated that it’s Wii system will not be able to compete with XBox 360 and Playstation 3 in terms of graphics. So what does that leave them? You guessed it: game play revolution (and price point, of course!).

Nintendo’s E3 mantra about Wii has been Playing (not seeing) = Believing. So, they’ve introduced their brand spanking new motion sensitive controller, and what they hope is a revolution in game play: it’s not just about looking anymore. it’s about moving your body. It’s about feel. It’s about real world action.
