The End of Hard Drives?

May 24, 2006 by Gadzooki

I remember when computers didn’t come with hard drives. I also remember when computer stopped using 5inch, and now 3inch floppies. Turns out, the classical hard drive will enter the dustbin of history pretty soon too.

This makes sense of course. Hard Drives are lowder, bigger, heavier and slower than most other forms of memory, plus they depend on mechanical parts which requires that they use substantially more energy. Since power consumption is most naturally an issue with mobile devices, it makes sense that the first full fledged computing device to completely discharge the hard drive will be a laptop notebook from Samsung. Samsung will debut the technology on two models, the lower end Q1-SSD and the higher end Q30-SSD (hey, what’s the deal with Q’s lately. It’s like Q is the new Z 😉 )

Instead of a hard drive, flash memory will be used. There are several benefits to using flash memory. First, those sounds you hear when you’re computer is accessing info on the hard drive…gone. Golden silence. Long boot times? Gone. You get 50% faster boots. Reading and writing data? On the average, it’ll be faster. You want light? How about 2 pounds?

The MacBook: Sleek and simple with Intel inside

The MacBook
The MacBook: Sleek and simple with Intel inside

Apple has just released the Intel Core Duo Powered MacBook running up to 2Ghz and priced competitive to many PC based notebook laptops. Specked out, the Macbook can have an 80G hard drive, a DVD-burner, up to 2GB of RAM, Bluetooth, wireless G ready, and (who would have thought), you can even get your MacBook in black.

So Apple has decided to dive feet first into the world of Intel, further blurring the lines between Macs and PCs. The thing is, I think that Apple can pull this trick off. More than any of the big PC makers, Apple knows how to design and market their product, and with an attractive price point the MacBook is destined to succeed.

LG XNote T1 Express Dual – Thinnest Laptop In World

May 15, 2006 by Gadzooki

Motorola’s Razr phones popularized thinness in the world of cell phones. All the kids want thin. Now, LG looks to make thinness the hottest feature in laptop notebooks. The LG XNote T1 is only 21 milimeters thick (that’s .8267716527 inches), even with an installed DVD player/burner. Now that’s impressive.

LG is clear marketing its XNote T1 under the “sexy and sophisticated” rubric. Check out this picture from their ad shots page.

wall_img_04.gif Sexy and sophisticated indeed. But, the XNote T1 Express Dual isn’t all form and no function. In fact, it boasts a solid 14 inch WXGA+ screen with up to 1440×900 resolution. It runs on an Intel Core Duo processor up to 1.66 Ghz, the option for a fingerprint reader, up to 4GB of RAM, BlueCore 4 Bluetooth, WiFi, DVD Burner and more.

All of this is packed into 4.2lbs and .8267716527 inches thick (or thin).

Sony MouseTalk: I Want One!

May 13, 2006 by Gadzooki

The Sony MouseTalk is one of those cool gadgets that everyone’s going to want. Pure innovation. Pure genius. What is it you ask? It’s a combo optical mouse/VoIP phone. Seems pretty wierd until you think about it!

mousetalk.gif

How many times have you had your hand on the mouse while either 1) you were receiving a phone call or 2) had the idea to make a phone call? Happens all the time to me. Sony’s clearly targeting the internet generation here: those people who spend hours on the internet every day.

It just occurred to me that there’s a positive side-effect to the MouseTalk: the form forces you to choose one or the other: either talk on the phone or use your mouse. I say that this is positive because there have been too many times when I’ve been surfing the net and reading email at the same time that I’m talking on the phone. Bad combo in the my case. Most of the time the conversation suffers. But Sony’s MouseTalk looks to correct that habit!

Hey, the design looks nice, the combo-functionality is perfect (especially for those constantly on the go), and it looks like Sony has a winner on their hands.

Own a Lamborghini for under £2000

April 14, 2006 by Jen

First, Acer brought us a Ferrari-branded laptop. Not to be outdone, Asus brings us the Ferrari’s little cousin, the Lamborghini (said to be the poor man’s Ferrari, but what the heck–it’s a great Italian sports car brand–exotic nonetheless). The co-branded laptop model is expected to be released by end-April and will retail for less than £2,000 (about US$3,500). Expensive, but hey, it’s fast, it’s sleek, it’s cool. It’s a Lamborghini!

Full specs include a Colour Shine Glare Type 15-inch SXGA + (1400 x 1050) screen, nVIDIA GeForce 7400/512MB Turbocache graphics card, a 120GB hard drive, DVD 9.5-inch Super-Multi Double Layer and 1GB DDRII – 667 MHz Ram.
