Apple’s iDevices are so versatile that you can make the appropriate apps to make it perform a gazillion different functions. One of the more popular uses for iPhones and iPads is by turning it into a universal remote control But there is one big drawback to this – Apple’s devices do not have infrared sensors, which is the only way a remote can communicate with a majority of devices or AV equipment.
There are many aftermarket solutions that provide infrared connectivity to iPhones or iPads and one of the newest ones is the VooMote Zapper. This new gadget is a simple dongle that you plug into your iOS device’s dock connector. The dongle is quite small – about the size of a paperclip. Using the dongle in conjunction with a free app that you download at the App Store, you can use your iPhone or iPad to control various equipment – from Audio equipment to various home theater devices.
The VooMote Zapper dongle is powered directly through the dock connector. A great feature of the IR dongle is that it actually has four sensors inside, this means you won’t need to point directly at the device for it to send the IR signal to your device of choice. The VooMote app is very flexible. You can customize it and even make different programs for the different setups you have in your house. There is also a function to make macros for frequently used functions. At some point both Twitter and Facebook integration will also be supported through a future update.
The VooMote Zapper is being sold for $69.99. Sometime next year, a matching case will also be ready for sale.
