Have you ever been in love? I have. And the moment I stepped out of that room, I felt so giddy, and there was a silly grin on my face, and all I could blabber was, “Have you ever been in love?” I walked through the streets in a daze, and I knew that I was virtually afloat, because I know have found my match.

My Targets for 2008 ;)

Posted by DummyGeekGurl as Hardware, Notebooks

This is the last week of 2007, and since I wasn’t able to make my pre-Christmas list for the past few days due to my irritating health problems, I might as well make my list until the 31st of December. But this time, it’s not a Christmas wish-list. It’s a New Year Targets list.Wishes are nice, but when push comes to shove, most people won’t go for it, because they’re just, well, wishes. But when these wishes become targets, a person can now concretely aim for it. So to start my year list right, I will put up my top ten gadget targets. :)

I interrupt Christmas cheer with a classic DummyGeekGurl gripe. The other week, I had accepted a firmware upgrade alert from Apple Inc. I had upgraded my firmware successfully, and I was fascinated by how it’s done. When the computer shuts down and restarts after the other software upgrades, instructions would greet you upon startup on how to perform the firmware upgrade. You restart (or was it shut down?) your computer again, then long-press the power button till the “sleep” indicator light (the one near the infrared receptor/port/whatever on the right side, where a floppy or a CD drive usually is on other computers) blinks repeatedly, or a beeping sound is elicited. Then the computer will just upgrade itself. When you boot up again, voila! You have upgraded your system.

Asus Eee PC Notebook designers and manufacturers have long searched for the holy grail of power efficiency. For this reason, the architecture of portable computers has evolved so much since the advent of laptop computers. And one of the main ways to conserve battery life is by reducing hard disk spinning. Recently, the trend is going towards solid-state storage. This means drives that have no moving parts. Most popular of these is flash memory. They're cheap, durable, and can hold data even without power (unlike volatile RAM, which loses data when power is off). Since flash memory can allegedly reduce consumption caused by spinning hard drives, some manufacturers have switched to using solid state drives for their ...

It's gift-giving season, everyone, but before I bombard you with my personal salivation picks, let me start December with a salivation trip with a twist: materialism married with charitable intentions on a grand scale.

MagSafe power adapterThere is one more reason why I love my MacBook, even if its 512MB RAM gives me a headache at times: the MagSafe Power Adapter kicks "hopelessly ordinary" laptop adapter butt! Mac users are aware that the beauty of the MagSafe Power Adapter lies in its ability to seamlessly come off one's MacBook with a quiet click, saving the Mac user a few months of heartache had his or her MacBook come crashing to the ground and, though highly unlikely, rendered beyond repair. And yet I only realized how truly amazing the MagSafe adapter was when one time I awoke to my floor becoming an indoor mini-pool after an hour of rain, which fell upon my world when I was deep in REM.

I just went to PowerMac Center, a local reseller for all things Apple and their accessories essentials. One of the things that I saw there was a silicon cover for the MacBook keyboard. There was this day when I went all obsessive-compulsive with my Mac’s keyboard, because the gaps, or what should be more appropriately named “dust wells” have gathered dust bunnies and other gunk that have made me brush those gaps over and over again that day, after wiping the dust stains with alcohol. Every few seconds I had to just take the brush and brush the dust out. True, this was highly unnecessary, but the obsessive-compulsive in me just had to do that. Eventually I resolved to had this cleaned when I will have Sayuri the Macbook’s lining fixed. So when I saw the display MacBook at PowerMac with the silicon keyboard cover, I decided to test typing on it. Sadly, it was the most uncomfortable experience on earth.

The 3G iPhone

I’ve had 3G on my Nokia N95 enabled since I got it – which is about a month or two ago now. I was thus surprised to learn that the iPhone didn’t include this much faster way to connect to the Internet. Consequently, I wasn’t exactly surprised when Steve Jobs big announcement turned [...]

GPS in 3D: Navigon 7200T GPS Navigator

I’ve had my fair share of traveling around the USA with my trusty NextStar GPS system.  I never leave home without it, Chicago has too many freeways, turn pikes and fly overs for me to deal with.  When I need to get from point A to point B in Chicago land and the [...]
