Okay, sure, old-school gaming emulators are a dime a dozen. You can easily download one off the net for a small price – or if your Google-fu is strong, free – and you can just download the ROMS of the games that you legally (heh) purchased back in the console’s heyday, and play away! I actually have quite a few installed on my computer and a NES and GBA emulator on my Nokia E63 as well.

So what’s the big deal about playing SNES games on the Nokia N900?

Well, I don’t think any other cellphone can allow you to play SNES games through a PS3 SixAxis controller. And if you use the Nokia N900’s TV out function, you can actually connect your diminutive cellphone to a ginormous HDTV and enjoy your games on a huge screen!

Setting it up is a bit complicated though. Pairing the PS3 SixAxis controller to your N900 via bluetooth isn’t as easy as it looks, though. Unfortunately N900’s Maemo does not come with joystick and mouse support in kernel. These instructions will help you reconfigure the device’s kernel to enable joystick device and mouse support.

Were you able to get SNES emulators to work on your N900? Don’t be afraid to try it, and tell me what happens!

[via]

Linking up to a PlayStation Eye camera, the system allows face, voice and body movement recognition in order to control games in a completely different way.

This motion controller (which doesn’t have an official name yet) is equipped with two motion sensors, three axes gyroscope and three axes accelerometer that can detect the controller’s angle and movement held in the user’s hand.

It’s equipped with both a sphere that can give visual feedback to the user, and DUALSHOCK-esque rumble feature.

Pricing isn’t available yet, but an initial list of games and other apps that will be launched next year, or upgraded via network update, to be compatible with the motion controller is:

Ape Escape (Working Title)

Echochrome 2 (Working Title)

Eccentric Slider (Working Title)

Sing and Draw (Working Title)

Champions of Time (Working Title)

Motion Party (Working Title)

The Shoot (Working Title)

Tower (Working Title)

It’s probably in response to Sony’s recent PS3 announcement though you won’t hear Microsoft admitting that, suggesting instead that it’s all to do with the holiday season and “deep experiences that don’t require deep pockets”.

What’s immediately obvious is that both 120GB capacity Xbox 360 and new slimmer PS3 both cost around the $300 mark. Of course you’ll find deals on both if you shop around, but it’s clear that Sony and Microsoft are both aggressively pushing their gaming solutions.

That slimmer PS3 rumor from a couple of months ago has finally come to pass, with Sony announcing that a new PlayStation 3 will be released in September.

The new PS3 will feature a 120GB hard drive, Blu-ray drive, new system software (version 3.00) and BRAVIA Sync (for tying up to your Sony TV). It’ll cost $299.

Sony’s making a big thing of the re-branding, changing the name from PLAYSTATION 3 to PlayStation 3 (note the capitals — I’ve obviously been getting it wrong all these years as I’ve often referred to it the “new” way) and introducing a “PS3″ logo to be engraved on the surface of the new console.

The new PS3 will measure 29cms (W) x 6.5cms (H) x 29cms (D) and weigh around 3.2kgs.

Existing PS3 consoles will have their prices reduced (presumably to clear) from today — $299 for the 80GB model and $399 for the 160GB model. I’m not quite sure why you’d buy the 80GB model for the same price as the new 120GB model unless you desperately need it now or want some of the legacy features (like being able to install your own operating system — this option has been removed from the new PS3). Maybe it’s a price typo?

Anyway, no matter. The new PS3 is coming on September 1, 2009. European users are ripped off again, paying the equivalent of $421 for the privilege of owning the system.

Will it work? Championship Manager has a loyal fan base and could well convert many more if it’s available for £2.51 (about $4). It might even encourage users to buy the legitimate copy instead of getting it from a torrent site.

Crysis developer Crytek has threatened its home country, Germany, to leave the country if the ban on violent games isn’t lifted.

“A ban on action games in Germany is concerning us because it is essentially like banning the German artists that create them,” he told PC Games Germany. “If the German creative community can’t effectively participate in one of the most important cultural mediums of our future, we will be forced to relocate to other countries.”

“The current political discussion will deprive German talent of its place on the global game development stage, and deprive German consumers of entertainment that is considered safe and fun around the world.”

The German government is considering to ban all violent and 18+ from the shop shelves (and online shops). This would not only invoke that stores are not allowed to sell the games anymore but also that developers aren’t allowed to actually develop this kind of games in Germany. Seems as if Crytek doesn’t have an other option than leaving the country if the ban is followed up. The threat will be labelled as a ‘cry for attention’ from now on.

German government has been criticizing violent computer games since a school shooting in March was linked to the popular shooter game Counter-Strike. The parliament had hoped to install the ban before the federal elections in September this year but a petition with more than 67.000 subscribers blocked these plans. Any petition reaching more than 50000 subscribers within 6 weeks must be considered and read out in the parliament under German laws. Take that Facebook.
