I love science fiction. I’ve always been a geek since I was kid so my world was filled with fantasy and science fiction. It’s a love that I have carried with me even in my later years as evidenced by my growing collection at home. This love has also carried over to my choice of gadgets.
There are many gadgets and devices out there that are very intriguing and that evoke scifi or fantasy. Just take for example the Cryptex USB flash drive. The moment you first lay your eyes on this cool looking item, you’ll think it may have been bought from a memorabilia store as an old curio. It does look like it’s an antique. But rest assured that it’s as modern as it can get.
If you’ve read Dan Brown’s novel The Da Vinci Code, he used a cryptex as one of the plot devices in the protagonist’s quest to find out the truth. A cryptex is a cylindrical vault that has rotating rings on it. The rings correspond to a code and you need to line up the correct codes in order to unlock it. The guy who made this Cryptex USB drive, a Russian who uses the name Tarator, used AutoCAD to design the whole concept for this Cryptex. He then moved on to actual mechanical drawings so that the individual parts can be fabricated. This product is not made from plastic. This is real metal. And the design is just so cool that it could win design awards.
Just imagine using this USB drive. You put in all of your most sensitive information inside it and lock it up. It so cyber punk, I just want to get hold of this drive and use it myself. Anyone who desires to get that information will have the hardest time to unlock it, if at all.
